Reading 2008 review: Crystal Castles

Where and when: Dance stage, Sunday, 5.25pm, Reading

Dress code: Black leather, strong eyeliner and chipped nail polish.

Who's watching: Those ker-azy kids, tranquil jumping afterwards three days.

In a nutshell: A complete fog courtesy of the smoke machine coats the stage to the point where is difficult to see vocaliser Alice Glass make an appearance, though it isn't a problem because she can be heard shouting "Fuck, ass, fuck, roll in the hay, fuck, shag" for no apparent reason. The Toronto duo's set goes off without a hitch, with typically propellent performances of Crimewave and Alice Practice resulting in endless screaming and peppy around from the interview. Their messy techno-punk doesn't cause quite an the reported mayhem of their Leeds gig (with Glass getting right into the dense of the crowd) nor does it result in them having the sound cut (as with their Glastonbury 2008 performance) merely it does feature the singer leaping from the speakers and playing dead, and is received with a great deal of joy.

High point: Courtship Dating, the track that brought them a reasonable degree of prominence for its (hem) similarity to the Timbaland produced cartroad Ayo Technology, and which kicks the crowd surfriding into cogwheel.

Low point in time: The smoke machine. Some people couldn't see a bloody thing.

How hard do they rock?: It must be tiring being Alice Glass, flinging herself and about and tattle in that high-pitched room. Her knob-twiddling partner Ethan Kath has it well-to-do. Anyway, they rocked simply the right side of hard.

Letters: Missed opportunity to attract a new audience for classical music

Contrary to Andrew Clements's experience at last Wednesday's Prom (Reviews, August 15), I launch Gustavo Dudamel's concert with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra on Thursday night at Snape Maltings every bit as exciting as his celebrated Prom with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra final year. Indeed I'd debate that it was even more of a exuberate because of the repertory; from final year everybody remembers those wonderful Venezuelan kids doing the Mambo from West Side Story. But this week the supposedly impassive Swedes were giving us mainstream masterworks, Ravel's La Valse and the Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz.

They made them sound vivid, dynamic and deeply moving, too. Maybe it had something to do with the acoustic of Maltings concert hall, but far from existence an orchestra "lacking whatsoever distinctive grapheme", the Gothenburg players under Dudamel's inspirational baton were positively brimful with brimstone in the Witches Sabbath and I've never seen second violins play with such fire or reckless abandon. The oboe and cor anglais solos were exquisite, the timps terrifying, the starting time clarinet skint our black Maria and the entire trombone section doing the arere in the Tico-Tico encore deserve honorary citizenship from Hugo Ch�vez. The mystery is that the BBC chose not to televise such a super Prom occasion, contempt Charlotte Higgins's perceptive assessment (Comment, August 13) of what Dudamel is bringing to classical music.

Charlotte Higgins gives a wondrous summary of what makes Gustavo Dudamel so special. It likewise identified where the European classical music scene is going so wrong. Dudamel's Prom was electrifying and the sense of joyfulness, passion and pride which he and the other musicians brought to the performance was palpable. So why was this concert - one of the most visually exciting of the season - not televised by the BBC? And wherefore was no reference to the Proms season made during, earlier or after the BBC's new Maestro series? Dudamel in activity, rather than the antics of Peter Snow et al, would have been a perfect introduction to this tremendous world of music.

Tom Service's list of composers wHO have written for the viola is far from complete (Film&Music, August 15). The concertos by Edmund Rubbra and Benjamin Frankel, the sonatas by Arthur Bliss and Rebecca Clarke, are very fine indeed. Perhaps the earliest concerto for viola and orchestra is by Blackwood McEwen, which was performed recently and should be so again. The instrument is not scarcely an English one; we should remember the sonata of Shostakovich and the concerto by Henze. One of Bartok's last works was a viola concerto. It is a virtually beautiful instrument.

Mutya Buena has been an outside star since the age of 15, when she enjoyed her number ane impinge on with the British pop radical Sugababes, just it wasn't until 2007 that she stepped out on her possess as a solo artist. Slash plans Sebastian Bach collaboration

Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash is planning a collaboration with Sebastian Bach.

The Skid Row vocalist told Billboard that the project sounded "mind blowing", but claimed he was sworn to secrecy about the details.

However, Bach insisted that he would not be acting as a replacement for fired frontman Scott Weiland in Velvet Revolver.

Bach said it would be too "awkward" because of his close friendship with Slash's former Guns N' Roses bandmate Axl Rose.

Fiddler's Green were formed in 1990 in Erlanger and were major players in Germany's folk-rock rebirth of the early and mid '90s. They perform a residual of traditional Irish songs and original compositions in a expressive style sometimes redolent of the Pogues and Oysterband only they besides add twists of ska and nods to Johnny Cash and Tom Waits. Eagles extend 'Long Road' trip

The tour now stretches into September, when the Eagles will play two nights in Chicago. An updated itinerary is listed below.The band is supporting its first new studio set in 28 years, "Long Road Out of Eden," which debuted at the top of The Billboard 200 in November and has since been certified seven-times platinum. The lead single, "How Long," earned the Eagles their fifth Grammy award, and the follow-up, "Busy Being Fabulous," is currently holding the No. 15 spot on the adult contemporary chart.On the road, bandmates Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit are also mixing in a good dose of their classic hits, like No. 1 singles "Hotel California," "Heartache Tonight," "Best of My Love," "One of These Nights" and "New Kid in Town."The Eagles have sold more than 120 million albums worldwide since the early '70s. Their "Greatest Hits 1971-1975" is the best-selling album of all time in the US.
